1. "The Artist" (2011)
This movie was based on the true story of French painter Georges Braque who struggled with mental illness throughout his life. He was known for his cubist-style paintings and had many famous friends including Pablo Picasso.
His work was often criticized due to its lack of emotion and he eventually became depressed and suffered from hallucinations. He committed suicide at the age of 47.
2. "A Room with a View" (1985)
Based on E.M. Forster's novel A Room with a View, this film tells the story of Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman who travels to Florence to study art history. She meets her friend Mark Darcy, a wealthy American artist, who becomes infatuated with her.
3. "La Vie en Rose" (2007)
This romantic comedy-drama follows the lives of several people living in Paris, France. It focuses on two lovers, Rose DeWitt Bukater and Jack Dawson, played by Cate Blanchett and Leonardo DiCaprio, respectively. Their relationship is tested when Rose becomes involved with a married man named Emile de Becque.
4. "Amadeus" (1984)
Featuring Tom Hulce as Antonio Salieri, Amadeus tells the story of a composer who struggles to find success while working under the tyrannical Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Eventually, Salieri begins to resent Mozart and plots his downfall.
5. "Gone with the Wind" (1939)
Scarlett O'Hara is a strong-willed Southern belle who falls in love with Rhett Butler, a handsome war hero. When she discovers that he is engaged to someone else, Scarlett sets out to win him back.
6. "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1990)
This film stars Edouard Naderi as Cyrano de Bergerac, a poet who writes letters to Roxane, a beautiful woman he admires. However, Cyrano's letters fall into the hands of a jealous rival, Christian de Neuvillette, who believes Cyrano is writing them to himself.
7. "My Life to Live" (1998)
This biopic features Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer whose gender identity is challenged by Nazi doctors. After being diagnosed with what they believe to be a fatal disease, Lili undergoes surgery to become a woman.
8. Finding Vivian Maier (2013), John Maloof and Charlie Siskel
In her lifetime, Vivian Maier worked as a nanny and housekeeper in Chicago as a single woman. Her prolific street photography was only discovered after she passed away.
9. Mr. Turner (2014), Mike Leigh
A film based on the last 25 years of William Turner's life, when he was already an established artist, celebrates the work of the Romantic British painter. As a man who interweaves the sublime with the mundane, Turner is depicted here as an ordinary, yet genius individual. Additionally, the film discusses how he perceives light and sees things differently.
10. Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present (2012), Matthew Akers and Jeff Dupre
It follows Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic as she prepares for her retrospective show at The MoMA in one of the best art documentaries. Marina's pioneering role in performance art is explored as archival footage and interviews take shape. The book examines her romantic and artistic relationship with Ulay over a period of many years.
