Art for Non-Artists

What is art for a person who doesn’t know how to create art? How do they perceive the concept of creating an artistic painting or drawing? In this article we will understand how art can be seen through a person who is not an artist.

Let me recount to you my experience of attempting a portrait sketch. Personally, when I try to draw a face, usually the eyes or ears are asymmetrical. Of course, it comes with practice. The nose is a complicated part of the face to sketch because we might not know which side it’s facing. The most mesmerising part about a face are the eyes and that is the most important sketch. The shadows and the shading are a bit overused at times when someone doesn't know how to sketch, but it's okay because it will be perfect through practice.

If you don’t paint you must be wondering, are colours just randomly placed next to each other and blended? Or do they have a purpose? Are all the paint brushes the same? Can they find the meaning behind a painting through each stroke?

In general, can a person who doesn’t know how to create a painting be called an artist?

The answer is YES. We all are artists! We create art in many other forms. Our life is a blank canvas and we are the painters. We can become artists of any field if we practice.

Was M. F. Hussain or Leonardo Da Vinci, a born artist? No, they weren’t. They practiced for hours. Fun fact! Michelangelo was so into his art, he didn’t have a bath for weeks till his work was complete. We’re not telling you to not have a bath, we’re telling you to excel in your passion and chase after what you feel you want to do best. If you don’t know how to paint, it doesn’t mean you don’t understand a painting. If you have your own meaning in a painting, it is right because interpretating art is always subjective.

“EVERYWHERE WE LOOK

COMPLEX BEAUTY OF NATURE

BLAZES BEFORE OUR EYES”

-Vincent Van Gogh
